About
Cantus Firmus Choral Lab is a professional choral laboratory in Vancouver where conductors and composers work directly with professional singers in a focused rehearsal environment.
Meeting monthly at the Vancouver Academy of Music, the 2026–2027 season brings together 8–9 professional singers, a professional pianist for accompanied repertoire, and conducting mentorship from Kari Turunen, DMA, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
Conductors receive real podium time to develop gesture, rehearsal technique, interpretation and musical communication. Composers can hear their works brought to life, test musical ideas and refine their writing through direct collaboration with experienced choral musicians.
Season 1 explores 15 works spanning different periods and styles of Western classical music alongside musical traditions and voices from around the world. The season culminates in a live recital at Koerner Recital Hall on April 30, 2027, with selected guest-conducting opportunities available by approval of the artistic leadership.
The name Cantus Firmus comes from the historical practice of using a “fixed melody” as the foundation around which other musical voices develop. In the same spirit, the Lab provides a strong musical foundation from which conductors, composers, and singers can explore, collaborate, and grow.
Founded and artistically directed by choral conductor Trésor Otshudi, Cantus Firmus combines sustained podium experience with mentorship from Kari Turunen, DMA, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

Conducting Mentor
Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Kari Turunen is an internationally experienced conductor and educator.
As Conducting Mentor for Cantus Firmus, Kari provides artistic guidance and professional feedback to participating conductors, with particular attention to score study, gesture, rehearsal practice, interpretation and communication with professional singers.

A season-long professional development opportunity for conductors seeking sustained podium experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to take repertoire from score study through rehearsal to performance with professional singers.
The 2026–2027 program includes:

4 hours of podium time with the Cantus Firmus professional ensemble, scheduled across the season

Tuition: $2,750
Admission to the Conductor Program is by application and approval of the artistic leadership. The program is intended for conductors who demonstrate sufficient preparation, musicianship, professionalism, and potential to benefit from sustained work with the ensemble.
Once admitted, participants work toward the preparation and performance of one approved work in the Season 1 Final Recital at Koerner Recital Hall, subject to successful completion of the program requirements.

Season 1 of Cantus Firmus Choral Lab is now underway at the Vancouver Academy of Music, and conductors and composers are invited to join us during the 2026–2027 season.
For conductors, the Lab offers meaningful podium time with professional singers, opportunities to develop rehearsal technique and gesture, explore repertoire, test musical ideas, and receive feedback in a focused professional environment.
For composers, Cantus Firmus provides the opportunity to hear a choral work rehearsed by experienced singers, make discoveries in real time, and better understand how the music functions practically in rehearsal and performance.
Participants may join for a single session, observe first, rehearse a work with the ensemble, or pursue a more substantial conducting experience. Selected conductors may also be considered for the April 30 final recital, subject to approval by the artistic leadership of Cantus Firmus Choral Lab.
Cantus Firmus is designed for artists who want more than theory alone: it is a place to conduct, create, experiment, refine, and grow through direct work with professional choral musicians.

À la Carte Options
Flexible opportunities for conductors, composers, observers, and educational groups who wish to participate without enrolling in the Season-Long Conductor Program.
Observer / Auditor — $100
Attend and observe one complete 2-hour rehearsal session.
Conducting Lab — 15 Minutes — $175
Receive 15 minutes of podium and rehearsal time with the professional ensemble.
Conducting Lab — 30 Minutes — $300
Receive 30 minutes of podium and rehearsal time with the professional ensemble.
Composer Lab — $300
Receive 30 minutes with the professional ensemble to rehearse, hear, and explore one choral work.
Conducting Lab — 1 Hour — $550
Receive 60 minutes of podium and rehearsal time with the professional ensemble.
Youth Conducting Lab — $550 per group
An introductory conducting experience for youth choirs, music schools and educational organizations.
Up to six young musicians share a 60-minute session with the Cantus Firmus professional ensemble, receiving approximately 10 minutes of podium time each. Participants may work from a shared prepared work and explore fundamental conducting skills including preparatory gesture, tempo, cueing, releases, listening and musical communication.
No previous conducting experience required.
Institutional rate: $550
Conducting Lab — Full Session — $950
Conduct and rehearse the professional ensemble for one complete 2-hour session.
Final Recital — Guest Conductor — $350
Approved conductors may add the opportunity to conduct one prepared work during the April 30 final recital.
Payment Policy
Full payment is required upfront before participation. Monthly payment plans or installment options are not available.
Final Recital Participation
Guest conducting in the April 30 recital is not guaranteed and is subject to approval by the artistic leadership of Cantus Firmus Choral Lab, based on preparation, repertoire suitability, and performance readiness.

Application Requirements
Conductor Lab — Submission Requirements:
Résumé or CV
A current résumé or curriculum vitae outlining conducting experience, musical training, ensembles, education, and other relevant professional experience.
Two Conducting Videos — Contrasting Repertoire
Two video samples demonstrating the applicant’s conducting through contrasting repertoire. Contrast may be demonstrated through style, period, tempo, character, or technical demands.
Each video must:

Be filmed from the choir’s point of view, facing the conductor.

Clearly show the applicant’s face and torso; a full-body view is preferred.

Provide a clear and unobstructed view of the applicant’s conducting gesture and technique.

Show the applicant conducting a live choir whenever possible. Videos of the applicant conducting to a recording will also be accepted.
The videos should allow the artistic leadership to assess elements such as beat patterns, preparatory gestures, cueing, releases, physical communication, expression, and musical interpretation.
Videos that do not clearly show the applicant conducting may not be considered.

Goals for the Lab Session

Submissions are reviewed by the artistic leadership of Cantus Firmus Choral Lab. Acceptance is based on the suitability and readiness of the work, the practical requirements of the score, and the potential benefit of working on the piece with the ensemble.

Join Cantus Firmus Choral Lab for an evening tracing the choral voice across centuries, traditions, and cultures.
Led by Trésor Otshudi, Conductor & Artistic Director, this MM Choral Conducting Graduation Recital brings together nine professional singers, pianist, guest musicians, and guest conductors in a program spanning Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Contemporary, and global choral traditions.

Cantus Firmus Choral Lab is a program of Trésor Music, founded and artistically directed by Trésor Otshudi.
Program information, including repertoire, conducting mentors, professional singers, pianists, guest musicians, rehearsal and performance venues, session dates and times, and other program details, is subject to change based on artistic, scheduling, personnel, venue, or operational requirements.
The participation of any individual mentor, singer, pianist, musician, or artistic collaborator is not guaranteed for every session. Cantus Firmus Choral Lab and Trésor Music reserve the right to engage substitute or alternate professional artists when necessary.
Rehearsals and performances are currently scheduled at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Individual sessions may be relocated to another suitable venue when necessary. Participants will be informed of material scheduling or location changes as reasonably practicable.
Published repertoire represents the planned Season 1 program and may be adjusted, substituted, added to, or removed for artistic or practical reasons.
Admission, repertoire assignments, allocation of podium time, and participation in performances or the Season 1 Final Recital remain subject to the artistic approval of Cantus Firmus Choral Lab. Payment for a Lab session or program does not, by itself, guarantee participation in the Final Recital.
Cantus Firmus Choral Lab, Trésor Music, and Trésor Otshudi reserve the right to make reasonable modifications to program structure, personnel, repertoire, scheduling, venues, and other operational details when necessary to maintain the artistic, educational, professional, or operational objectives of the program.
